If you have any summer flowering container plants, now is a great time to give them a light dose of fertilizer to promote more blooming in August and the remainder of the summer season! 

Pruning needs this month:

Summer-flowering shrubs bloom on last year’s wood, which means that the only reason it would be necessary to prune them is to maintain a desired size or shape. August is the last month of the year where this type of pruning will be beneficial. Waiting any longer puts your plants exposed wood vulnerable to winter damage. 

Pests and diseases to look out for this month:

Some common garden pests to keep an eye out for this August include:

• Armyworms 
• Japanese beetles 
• Chinch bugs
• Aphids
