Horticultural Oils

Horticultural oils are highly refined petroleum-based or plant-based oils used on plants and lawns. They help fight against many different kinds of pests and diseases. Horticultural oil is a much more gentle and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides.

These oils work by suffocating insects like aphids, spider mites, and scale. They then repell them by making the applied area unappealing for these insects to lay any eggs in that area. Horticultural oils also help prevent and fight diseases by inhibiting fungal spore growth, and providing protection from things like mildew.

Because horticultural oils are a much more gentle form of pest and disease treatment than traditional chemical-based pesticides, these oils can be used to protect dormant plants and lawns during the winter months. Most horticultural oil brands label and advertise their products based on which season they are meant to be applied during. There are both summer and winter season horticulture oils. Because of that, be sure to read the product packaging thoroughly before deciding which type of horticultural oil is best suited for your specific needs.
