Maintenance Tips In February

Fertilizing needs this month:

While it is not necessary to do any fertilizing during the month of February, there are still ways to actively contribute to the health of your lawn and your plants this month.

  1. If you have a winter garden pest infestation that needs to be addressed, it is safe to use dormant horticultural oils as a treatment method.
  2. Begin conducting soil tests to determine what type of fertilizer will be necessary for your particular needs when it comes time to apply that fertilizer.
  3. Begin planning/scheduling pre-emergent herbicide applications for early March to help prevent summer weeds

Pruning needs this month:

The month of February may be your last chance to do some pruning on your dormant deciduous trees and shrubs before they begin to come out of their dormancy season. Here are some plants that we recommend ensuring have been properly pruned before the end of February:

  • Crape Myrtle
  • Butterfly Bush
  • Panicle Hydrangea
  • Japanese Maple
  • Rose of Sharon
  • Dogwood
  • Wisteria
