Common Weeds To Look Out For This Summer 

Chamber Bitter 

Methods of removal:

  • Hand pulling: Wearing garden gloves, grab the weed from the base and pull firmly until removed 
  • Smothering: Spread a layer of newspaper, cardboard, or a wood board to keep the weed from receiving sunlight and other nutrients until it dies 
  • Planting groundcover: Planting a fast growing groundcover can grow over a chamber bitter weed infestation and prevent it from spreading 
  • Vinegar spray: Mix equal parts of water and vinegar into a spray bottle and spray the weeds with it regularly until they die 

Beach Morning Glory 

Methods of removal:

  • Hand pulling: Wearing garden gloves, grab the weed from the base and pull firmly until removed 
  • Chemical control: Herbicides containing ingredients like 2,4-D and dicamba are best for removing beach morning glory weeds 
  • Mowing: Mow twice at the end of spring each year to cut back the weeds while they are actively growing to stunt the weeds growth and keep it from spreading 

Sicklepod 

Methods of removal:

  • Hand pulling: Wearing garden gloves, grab the weed from the base and pull firmly until removed 
  • Shallow hoeing: Use a hoe or similar gardening tool to cut off the sicklepod from the roots at ground level to stop them from spreading 
  • Plant cover crops: Plant thick growing vegetation to grow over the sicklepods, preventing them from receiving nutrients 
  • Boiling water: Keep pouring boiling water over the sicklepods constantly for a few days until they die
