Maintenance Tips For February

Fertilizing needs this month:

Mid-late February is a good time to fertilize evergreen trees and shrubs. If you have an acid-loving plant it is recommended to use a holly tone fertilizer. Neutral plants prefer a plant tone or an all purpose fertilizer. If you are unsure of what type of fertilizer your plant needs, you can always conduct a soil test to determine which nutrients your plant is lacking.

Pruning needs this month:

February can be a busy pruning month for some gardeners who love summer blooming shrubs. Here are some shrubs that may need some pruning attention this month:

  • Limelight hydrangeas
  • Crape myrtles
  • Butterfly bush
  • Rose of sharon

It is important to hold off on pruning your spring-blooming shrubs in February. Here is a list of shrubs that you should NOT prune this month.

  • Azaleas
  • Lilacs
  • Climbing roses
  • Spirea
