June Maintenance

Fertilizing needs this month:

Warm-season grasses like bermudagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and zoysiagrass should be fertilized between late June and early August when air temperatures are between 75 and 95°F. Fertilizing too early in the spring can cause new shoots to grow instead of roots. 16–4–8, 12–4–8, and 18-24-6 are commonly recommended for lawn fertilization.

Pruning needs this month:

In June, you can also shape barberry, dogwood, and deciduous holly as needed. You can also prune broadleaf shrubs, such as azaleas, camellias, privets, glossy abelia, nandina, and cleyera. Once the new shoots are 6 to 12 inches long, prune the tips. You can also prune tall summer-flowering perennials by removing up to one-third of stem height by mid- to late June. This causes plants to branch and become bushier and produce more flowers.

Pests and diseases to look out for this month:

  • Aphids: Watch for aphid infestations in crops like squash, cucumber, tomato, lettuce, beets, and flowers. Signs of aphids include twisted and yellowed leaves, or stunted growth.
  • Stink bugs: These pests are known to feed on young developing fruit by inserting their piercing, sucking mouthparts. This can lead to a discolored spot beneath the skin that becomes evident when the fruit is sliced.
  • Flea beetles: Flea beetles are a huge problem in tomato gardens! They won’t kill your tomatoes, but they can cause your plant to lose vigor and become generally unhealthy.
  • Cutworms: These pests are most commonly found in field crops, grasses, and vegetable crops such as tomato, asparagus, bean, crucifers, cucurbits, corn, cowpea, lettuce, onion, pea, pepper, potato, spinach, and sweet potato.

Additional monthly tip:

Keep weeding

Keeping a consistent weeding schedule in June helps promote healthy crops by autumn.

Adjust watering

Adjusting watering schedules in June to adapt to the hot summer temperatures is very important for the health of your lawn and garden. For gardens and beds, soaker hoses are the most ideal form of watering. To encourage strong root growth, lawns should be watered deeply but less frequently.

Deadhead blooms

Annuals such as Marigolds can greatly benefit from some June deadheading as they finish blooming to promote long-lasting flowering.

Mulch

Mulch is an essential part of a successful garden because it provides moisture as well as weed control in your garden, and June is the most ideal time to add mulch to your garden. This is because the soil has warmed up and most seedlings are big enough.
