How to maintain your lawns irrigation system
If you have an irrigation system installed it is fairly easily maintained. When living in coastal South Carolina it’s a necessary item for good and consistent lawn care. It takes the guessing out of how much water your lawn, plants and shrubs need throughout the spring and summer. Once fall starts and your lawn goes into dormancy it does not need to be watered as often. Dormant lawns need approximately an inch a month – which it will get naturally. So in addition to the other fall lawn maintenance we’ve mentioned in earlier blog posts, maintaining your irrigation system in the fall is important.
Basically – turn it off! Sounds easy but there are some additional steps to perform to insure the irrigation system is ready for winter. Even though the pipes are underground they should be drained as should the irrigation pump. Your landscaper will perform this in Oct/Nov. Just like water pipes in an empty house the irrigation system is subject to the outside temperatures. While it’s unusual for Myrtle Beach to get sustained below freezing weather, it can happen and if the pump hasn’t been drained it can break.
