Chinch bugs

What to do about chinch bugs?

It’s that time of the year where chinch bugs can become problematic.   If you have a St. Augustine lawn then your lawn is more susceptible to cinch bug infestation than other grasses.  There is a resemblance to other lawn issues such as brown patch.  The easiest way to tell the difference is that brown patch tends to manifest in a circular pattern while chinch bug damage is irregular in shape.   Don’t panic but do call your landscaper if you see evidence of chinch bugs in between visits.

This is an example of what to look out for                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     – chinch bug 110     asuspicLG        Chinch_Bug1

Watering is important to control chinch bugs as well dry lawns are a breeding ground.  If you live in an area that is dry and hot, or going through a very dry spell, discuss with your landscaper the best watering schedule to adhere to help combat chinch bugs.    Your landscaper has a variety of ways to deter or eradicate chinch bugs – there may be some quick DIY fixes but to insure your lawn is going to remain lush and green it’s really best to leave to the professionals.
