Maintenance Tips For January
Fertilizing needs this month:
If your trees and shrubs are currently in dormancy, then January is actually a great time to use some slow release fertilizer to help keep those roots strong and healthy come spring time! If you are unsure of the appropriate ratio of N-P-K that your plants need, conduct a soil test to find out exactly where your soil is lacking in nutrients.
Pruning needs for January:
Trees and shrubs that you SHOULD be pruning this January:
- Abelia
- Beautyberry
- Butterfly bush
- Cape plumbago
- Crape myrtle
- Lantana
- Roses
- Panicle hydrangeas
- Winstera
Trees and shrubs that you SHOULD NOT be pruning this January:
- Azaleas
- Viburnum
- Speria
- Lilac
- Loropetalum
Pests and diseases to look out for:
White grubs: These winter pests feed on dense roots in your lawn and can cause discolored patches of grass. White grubs are also fed on by other pests like moles and skunks, who have been known to dig these larvae out of the ground to eat, causing further lawn damage.
Billbugs: These winter pests feed on blades of grass, chewing holes through them. These holes make it harder for the grass to absorb nutrients, which can ultimately cause yellowing patches of grass by late winter.
