Maintenance Tips This August

Fertilizing needs this month:

Early-mid August is a great time to fertilize your zoysia lawn to promote vibrant color and healthy new growth throughout the end of summer and early fall. A fertilizer that is low in nitrogen is the best choice for this time of the year. It may also be beneficial to apply a general purpose fertilizer to your hardy shrubs and groundcovers to give one last boost of nutrition before the end of the summer season.

Pruning needs this August:

Late summer pruning can be beneficial to some members of your garden, but it could potentially be harmful for others. Here is a list of plants that you should be pruning this August:

  • Azaleas
  • Viburnums
  • Dogwoods
  • Pittosporum
  • Weigela
  • Lilac
  • Butterfly bushes
  • Crape myrtles
  • Raspberries and blackberries

Pests and diseases to look out for this month:

If you have a vegetable garden, it is important to look out for cabbage worms and tomato worms during the late summer. These pests feed on foliage and vegetables, so they can very easily ruin the remainder of your summer harvest.

Additional monthly tip:

As the summer season comes to a close, here are some maintenance tips to help you prepare your garden for the fall:

  • Make sure your plants are getting ample amounts of water during this time while temperatures are still on the rise!
  • Harvest your vegetables as often as possible to promote a longer harvest season
  • Keep your lawn free of unwanted weeds before they are given the chance to take root and multiply

Last chance for summer planting:

Although we are approaching the end of the summer, there are still some plants that you can plant in August that will have the chance to thrive before the start of the fall/winter seasons. Some of those plants include:

  • Sunflowers
  • Sedum
  • Marigolds
  • Lavender
  • Lettuce
  • Kale
