What’s Blooming This July?

Fertilizing needs this month:

During the summer months, plants are using up more and more nutrients everyday to keep themselves healthy. It is a good idea to apply a slow-release granular fertilizer this time of year to give your plants all of the nutrients that they are going to need this summer. Although your lawn is not due to be fertilized until August, now can be a great time to observe your lawn and test your soil to help you pick the most effective fertilizer for your lawn.

Pruning needs this month:

This can be a great time to prune your summer-blooming shrubs like oleander and crape myrtles. This will promote a longer and fuller blooming period next season. It is also extremely beneficial to be deadheading all of the flowers in your garden consistently throughout the summer to maintain a full and healthy look. This is also the time of year when all of your fruit and vegetables will be producing an abundance of produce, so make sure you are harvesting as often as possible to ensure a fresh harvest every time.

Pests and diseases to look out for this month:

This time of year it is important to look out for pests like japanese beetles. You can protect your garden from japanese beetles and other common pests, try planting plants in your garden that repel such pests like garlic, onions, chives, and tansy. It can be beneficial to add more mulch to your garden during this time to help protect the roots of your plants and to help discourage weed growth.

Additional monthly tip:

As the temperatures rise it is important to remember that your plants are going to require much more water during the summer months than they do in the winter months. Irrigation systems can be a lifesaver for your lawn and your garden during the summer months. It is also a good idea to set your irrigation system to go off early in the morning before temperatures get too high for the day. This will allow your plants to hold onto nutrients for longer periods of time which is very beneficial during the summer months.
