A Guide To Fertilization
During your annual fertilization, you may have noticed some strange numbers on the bags. The three numbers on your bag of fertilizer stand for how much nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) that the bag of fertilizer contains.
For example:
- 10-8-12 = 10% N, 8% P, 12% K
Nitrogen (N) is the key macronutrient that promotes rapid growth by enriching the photosynthesis process.
Phosphorus (P) is a macronutrient that promotes larger flowers and longer blooming periods.
Potassium (K) is macronutrient helps strengthen the root system
This means if you have a plant that has well established roots but has produced very little blooms, then you will need a fertilizer that is high in phosphorus but low in potassium. For example: 6-12-2.
If you have a plant that is producing an abundance of blooms but is struggling with establishing roots and producing new growth, then you will need a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen and potassium, but low in phosphorus. For example: 12-3-10.
