Identifying Your Soil
There are 3 types of soil that could be living in your garden. Identifying your soil is important when trying to determine what to plant, how much water it needs, and more to protect your garden this season. Here is a quick synopsis on how to tell the difference between them:
Sand:
When identifying your soil, sandy soil feels rough and gritty and it has lots of air space allowing water to flow through it easily. Sandy soil does not hold enough moisture for most plants to thrive.
Silt:
Silty soil feels smooth when wet and holds a medium amount of moisture within the soil. Footprints from even the smallest animals (like birds) will be visible in silty soil. This is usually the best for planting out of the 3.
Clay:
Clay soil feels sticky when wet and hard when dry. This type of soil holds the most amount of moisture which is ideal for some plants, but for the most part clay soil does not contain enough air space for plants to thrive in it.
